Just moved to the neighborhood and received a menu for this place in the mail. We decided to try it, in large part due to the fact that they boasted a special vegetarian menu.My veggie cashew "chicken" tasted mostly like celery. Would not order again. My bf got sesame beef. It was like sweet and sour sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled in it. He said the beef was inedible.A lot of people reviewed this restaurant for the authentic menu and seemed to like it. We can't vouch for that part of the menu, but we can say that this is average to below average as far as chinese take-out goes. We don't love Mr. Chen's but agreed it is at least consistent in its mediocrity and will probably order from there in the future over this place.

The food was good but the service, well, they don't have service at all! The waitress rushed us to order and won't do any recommendation. Having more tea can turn into argument. Worst thing was she claimed "she don't care if we like it because she's not the boss". OMG...What happen to the restaurant?! No excuse for that even she may have very very very bad days.

If you are looking for AUTHENTIC chinese food in the area, Chalin's is THE place to go. Not only is the restaurant clean and the service is fast, the food is actually Chinese. I agree that you need to ask for the chinese menu.

Chalin's is average Chinese but their refusal to allow combination lunches when dining-in is ridiculous (you can get the combo for take-out). I'll never go back.I love a good Chinese combination lunch. An entree, some fried rice and a spring roll for a fair price is very attractive. Unfortunately, Chalin's doesn't see it this way - at least not for dining in the restaurant. Why on earth would it make sense to offer combo lunches for take-out only? The food at Chalin's is fairly good but I wouldn't call it remarkable. I would probably eat at Chalin's at least twice a month for lunch if they had lunch combinations - But I am not going to pay upwards of $20 for an unremarkable Chinese lunch a la carte. There's too many better lunch options.

A few friends told me they weren't so good, but I decided to try it out since there aren't many restaurants in this area. All I have to say is don't waste your money. The food was very bland, very small portions for the price, and way overpriced. Paid $15 for the "triple delight" carry out special and the tangy dumplings. The rice was overcooked, the spring roll was as tiny as my finer, and the meat/shrimp/vegetables were covered in a brown flavorless sauce. The dumplings were ok except I asked for them to not be made spicy and they were a little spicy. They tasted bland as well, except the peanut sauce they were smothered in I really couldn't taste anything inside of them. They had a sign for a carry out buffet style lunch special for $4 that might be edible for the price.

This place was recommended to me by a Chinese friend in the area. The ma po tofu and the wonton appetizer are absolutely out of this world. I don't like to visit the same restaurant twice usually, but I was craving that tofu all day yesterday, so here I am two days later!Chalin's is definitely the best Chinese in the area (I've tried the others). To qualify that, I'm pretty snobby about my Chinese food and generally avoid Americanized Chinese food. So a good review of a Chinese restaurant from me means it is darn good.

I'm trying not to get overexcited since good Asian food in DC is hard to come by.I initially refused to come to Chalin's since it looked like it'd be your typical American Chinese food joint - oily, greasy and serving classic General Tso's.However, I was pleasantly surprised that Chalin's has a 'secret' authentic Shanghainese menu. Ask your waiter if he doesn't give it to you.The Szechuan dumplings are really pretty good. Better than the ones served at Harmony Cafe in Georgetown (and i love Harmony Cafe!).I've been here a few times now, and I do see that a number of Shanghai businessmen frequent the place and get special dishes tailored for them when they speak in Mandarin.I think the trick here is if you know how to order the right stuff, your Asian craving will be satisfied.

My co-worker and I ordered shrimp and chicken fried rice and had it delivered. It was the worst tasting fried rice I have ever tasted. It was bland and tasteless. Some of the rice was hard and cold. I called them and asked how they had the nerve to feed people such trash, she said the rice was pre-prepared in the morning. She offered to send us lo-mein as a substitute. Although the lo-mein seemed freshly prepared and it was hot, unfortunately it was as bland and tasteless as the rice. Never again.

when I am asked to recommend the best Chinese restaurant in DC, I always say it is Sichuan Pavilion. Well this is not always the case. The food there is fine, but the service is not so good. Besides, there is always a long queue there. So yesterday we came to Chalin's Restaurant. Actually I have been here a few times. But I am bit confused by its name, and it used to called other ways. So we came in, ordered some fish, eggplant, tofu, and others. The taste is good, especially the eggplant. The service is real, and it was not crowded. We could enjoy an easy atmosphere to chat and enjoy our meal. We should have more time here.

Had no idea this place existed until the boy's Chinese class had a lunch there, then we went back another time ourselves. I would say it was passable. As far as sichuan food in the city goes, I would probably only go to this place when I'm sick of Great Wall or Sichuan Pavilion. The twice cooked pork was much inferior to Great Wall's. I'll give it some credit for using pork belly, but there was way too much other crap in it, like mushrooms. Who does that?! It also wasn't spicy enough even though we asked all our dishes be made extra spicy cuz we knew they would dumb it down. The spicy boiled fish was also lacking in numbingness and spiciness. Sigh...Will probably give it another shot at some point, but definitely not a go-out-of-your-way kinda place.
